Update Project HOPES
We would like to report on some activities that were carried out after the closing day, during the vacations.
Ate Ulway’s mother was part of the group that weaved at Coco Beach Resort 5 or 10 years ago. The new owner of Coco Beach has now permanently closed the business. Hundreds of employees and their families have been put out of work, a particularly bad state during the pandemic.
She is from the Hanunuo Mangyan tribe and said that none of her children can weave. We invited her and capitalized her thread and her labor for some way to help her family and preserve that to learn by the Iraya Mangyan Scholars.
Unlike the Mangyan Iraya tribes who have the skill of basket weaving, they do not know how to weave. I invited 2 parents of our Mangyan scholars to follow up with our scholars.
Feel free to look at the photos as an update of the program we started with the Mangyan scholars and parents:
Nilos Painting
Nilo is painting beautifully! Here are some photos of his progress in painting. We hope that he can break the usual culture of just sitting and letting the days pass, and the talent and opportunity he has now will sink into his mind and he will be able to continue painting. This way he is able to help his family immediately.
Gardening and Planting
For the gardening and planting, we also invited the parents of the Mangyan scholars so that they can have the harvest from August. We are thinking that through their products or harvest, they can have those in exchange or barter with groceries they need.
We will also reward the best gardens and all others will get a consolation prize to keep them motivated.
